For piano solo
-
Premiered by Avan Yu in Theatre, Hong Kong City Hall on 11 November, 2013.
Programme Notes
Commissioned by the winner of the Sydney International Competition, pianist Avan Yu, “Tube” is written for solo piano. In discussing with Avan on how the work should be written, he proposed this work should somehow related to his mother-city, Hong Kong, a place where he lived during his childhood. Like many metropolitans in the world, the heart of Hong Kong is connected by numerous tubes, including the theme of this piece, MTR. The piece begins with the piano “speaking” the line,
“This train will proceed shortly, we are sorry for any inconvenience caused.”
Such theme is then distorted and rearranged in various forms. This piece also depicts traveller’s emotional changes.
