Concert Review

  • Sam Goldbeck, “Percussion ensemble delivers masterful performance” 6 March, 2020, “Marimba Concerto No.1: Road Business”
    • “The guest performer, Van Geem, joined the fun in the next piece, which was a marimba concerto comprised of three movements called “Road Business,” written by Austin Yip, with four other student marimbists. It was an altogether beautiful piece that showed the range of talent that the students and their more experienced professional counterpart bring to the music, with the younger performers matching the elder musician in charisma and technique.”
  • Ivana Popovic, “Memory: Patrick Yim Plays works for solo violin – Patrick Yim” 24 February, 2020, “Miles Upon Miles”
    • Memory features works by a talented array of composers – Chen Yi, Kai-Young Chan, Yao Chen, Austin Yip and Michael-Thomas Foumai. Their music is both an engaging showcase of inventive musical ideas and treatises on contemporary violin techniques. Through the exploration of cultural identity and the role of memory in preserving it, they bring out a delicate tapestry of ideas on the significance of sound in both past and present-day settings. Field recordings processed through granular synthesis in combination with amplified violin in Miles Upon Miles by Yip is a perfect example of accord between relics of the past and rich expressions of the modern language.”
  • Rob Garatt “Tantalizing tasters of homegrown music” 15 November, 2019 – Romance
    • “Conducted by Lio Kuokman, the current music director of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, perhaps most instantly satisfying piece, on first listen at least, is Austin Yip’s Romance, a lush and impressionistic mood-painting of spiraling melodies and crashing, splashing strings – cresting majestically before falling away like an unanswered question.”
  • Harry Rolnick “New Spirits from Hong Kong’s Artists” 8 April, 2017 – 《蝶戀花》Die Lian Hua,《易安居士》The Poetess
