The piece draws inspiration from the artistic ideas and styles of several twentieth-century artists: American artist Barnett Newman, who used his signature vertical “zips” to explore space and a sense of presence; Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, who transformed geometric forms from tools for depicting the world into works of art in their own right; John Cage, whose use of chance operations sought to minimize the influence of the artist’s personal preferences; Agnes Martin, whose hand-drawn pencil lines create images that appear almost mechanically precise, yet retain a distinctly human warmth; and Wassily Kandinsky, who regarded colors, lines, and shapes as visual musical notes through which emotions and the spiritual realm could be expressed.
Through music, the work engages with these artists’ creative philosophies, exploring the expressive potential of points, lines, shapes, negative space, and color.
By inviting us to contemplate different paintings, the piece seeks to reveal how seemingly simple points, lines, and shapes can convey a rich spectrum of emotions and meanings.
